All Ireland Final 2023 - Dublin V Kerry - 4 Like(s)
Gough referee? Memory I have of him is during Cork/Kerry round robin game, awarding black card, and penalty given against Seán Powter for tackle on Geaney outside the box!

Any Good GAA Books? - 4 Like(s)

Replying To Tirchonaill1:  "I read Tomás Ó Sé's 'The White heat' book recently, I didn't like it at all, half of it was rambling on about his uncle Paidi and it was all very repetitive. One things for sure, not being able to beat Tyrone in Croke park in those big games in 03. 05 and 08 still rankles with them down in Kerry. Biggest regret I have with Donegal is we didn't beat them in that '14 final, we played absolute rubbish that day, still though that's sport, you have to do it on the day."
I thought Donegal played well in 2014 final. The mistake the goalie made in his poor kick out, resulting in Donaghy's goal, gifted the game to Kerry.

Whatever about Clare being robbed last Sunday , the only time a robbery definitely took place at a Munster Final was in 1977 in Thurles between Cork and Clare. Cork won the game but armed robbers made off with the gate receipts!

The Matchday Train Peculiarity - 2 Like(s)

Replying To hyperache:  "The main issue with trains is the overcrowding and general lack of them. Everyone flocks off and back on in Drumcondra and it's a general s***show. The public transport in Dublin is just about adequate but is absolutely shocking everywhere else, so can't imagine the hassle in having to come up from outside Dublin without driving. And if you do drive, there's nowhere to park haha, it's a nightmare."
GAA should move all games to PUC!

Will Rugby World Cup Harm Gaa. - 2 Like(s)
Don't understand this animosity towards rugby. Do rugby supporters demonstrate similar dislike to GAA? I don't think so! Probably because they are performing with a fine team in an international arena, and in a sport that's thriving, whilst GAA supporters still whine about demographics and where they went to school . I enjoy watching all sports and glad that rugby is one of them. Whether Keith Earls is from Moyross or Timbuktu has no relevance to me, as long as he plays well!

Massive game against South Africa. They probably will whack the **** out of each other, so I hope Ireland are strong going into Scotland game. France or NZ await in any quarter final. Ridiculous seeding as in contrast English have a soft route to quarter finals and should be fresher, with the ability to peak at optimum time. Bundee Aki is playing rugby of his life, and if Ireland continue to excel in line outs, I give them every chance! Roll on Saturday!

Derry minors very impressive today against Dublin.

Replying To OpenStand:  "Should this match have gone ahead ? And when it was a draw at full time would a replay not be fairer than playing in insane conditions people were warned to not drive unnecessary journeys ??"
Rain has never stopped football. Scotstown and Glen also served up an entertaining game. Michael Hurley getting injured early on was a blow to 'Haven, but they hung in there, and Damien Cahalane was the hero in the penalty shootout. He saved a penalty and scored 2. I believe his history as underage goalie with Greenmount was the reason he donned the goalkeeper jersey for penalties. He's an excellent footballer!!

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "Was hoping they'd be a bit earlier in the afternoon but looking forward to both. Cork are playing Roscommon in football the same day so that thankfully put a stop to their asking for one of the hurling. Stop in to have a pint and a sandwich in the ancestors local on the way and maybe on the way back although they be fierce bad company if we lose badly and they win :-)"
At least Roscommon are not likely to moan and groan about the trip to Leeside.

GAA Need To Ban Hits To The Head - 1 Like(s)

Replying To ExiledInWex:  "Yes, that is the hit that needs to be taken out. Whether intentional or not, the burden of caution lies with the player not in possession, not the player with the ball. How it is in rugby, if you lay a dangerous hit whether intentional or not its a red card. It needs to be stamped out. Its dangerous and it happens at every level in the game."
Correct! Incidences of concussion are big in rugby.Even more so in NFL where many players retired from the sport have suffered from dementia and Parkinson's. McMahon of the Bears winning team of 1986 is a notable example. Any intentional blow to head should be punished by red card and suspension.

Provincial Championships 2024 - 1 Like(s)

Replying To legendzxix:  "It has. Connacht had two competitive semi-finals to be fair. Kerry v Cork also in Munster."
I'm not sure how competitive Cork vs Kerry was. Cork had the chance to make it competitive, but blazed 2 goal chances over the bar in first half. In second half, only one winner looked likely, and Cork seemed more afraid of conceding a goal than going for a win. The provincials have lost their importance, and nobody in Derry will mind not winning Ulster, if Sam heads to the Oak Leaf county. Kerry will time their run to the all Ireland, and winning at weekend despite both Clifford's subdued will give them impetus.

Replying To BarneyGrant:  "Cork were certainly the better team in the first half but Dublin dominated the last quarter and had been coming back before the Cork penalty. Cork seemed to tire perhaps. Ref was good and let play flow. Cork perhaps have had good shout for a free when turned over in move that led to goal although it was consistent I suppose with his overall allowance for physicality that was not dangerous or pulling and dragging."
Towards end of game,Cork's number 13 pulled down by Dubs number 7 and free awarded to Dublin? I've given up at this point.

Replying To Cockney_Cat:  ""...but they [Limerick
have just produced the greatest team of all time" Is that a fact?"]Impossible and unfair to compare teams of different eras. The game in 1960's for example is from a generation ago, and comparison to today's game is meaningless. Kilkenny team of 2006-2012? And current Limerick team? Who knows as both were dominant. It's irrelevant really and just generates conversation in online forums, in a lull before championship. Still no chat about upcoming league final!

Replying To Viking66:  "That would be like saying Wexford were the best team of the 50s because they dominated in 55 and 56. That's nonsense."
Thought someone with over 8000 posts would do better than this! Fair play to you, you'll no doubt hit 10k soon.. a record? .Wexford won in 1955 and 1956 but never dished out the hammerings in finals that Tipperary did in '64/65. Tipp beat a good Kilkenny team in 1965 by 5-14 to 2-8 with an awesome display of hurling. To dominate the 1960's like Tipp did, takes some doing!

Castlehaven V Dingle - 1 Like(s)

Replying To Inatfullforward:  "Let's be respectful to each other's comments here. To be fair, foreveryoung was talking about public safety and travelling and it was a very long journey to and from in atttricious weather conditions. Why on earth did the Gaa drag both clubs up to Limerick city? Both clubs woukd have supporters from as young as 5 yrs old and as old as well maybe 90 yrs old and they all have to get to these matches somehow as well as everybody in between.. Club football is deep and and these people support through thick and thin and days like today don't happen without them.. Young lads would play football in any conditions which they did very impressively today but today was much more than a bit rain and looking at each parish as a whole, Castlehaven supporters had to make a round trip of approx 330km and Dingle supporters 306km. Is this safe on bad roads? Is this not very irresponsible of the GAA to expect this when there was a far easier halfway ground? And Ryanteam, our back roads might not be full of traffic but on days like today they are very treacherous so please look at the big picture here. Finally I think penalties are an absolute shocking way to end any Gaa match. Plenty of time for a replay. The football on display today was an absolute credit to both clubs in hurricane conditions. Both sets of players just went for it, displaying pure courage and honest football which in my opinion is better than any county football I've witnessed in recent years. Its a pity there had to be a loser today but club football was the real winner"
Castlehaven have St.Brigids next and bar injuries should be 50/50 game. Memories of a recent county final between Castlehaven and St Finbarrs would have been fresh in the players minds, when Barrs won a titantic battle after penalties. Tough luck to Dingle and the game was a credit to both teams.

Replying To Oldtourman:  "I could name a string of potentially good Footballers and Hurlers in Limerick that were 'lost' to rugby. Names Like Philip Danaher, Jeremy Staunton, Dan Larkin, Conor Murry and a young red haired O'Connor fellow from Fr Caseys, who looked the makings of a great forward in his few Championship outings with Limerick, all come to mind. However, it is the same story with every county and not just Cork and Limerick."
Yes I agree. It's actually good that kids have more of a choice of what to play nowadays than in the past. The allure of rugby is huge as it's international, and above all professional. It's extremely well organized and Ireland despite a small playing population are competing well on world stage. Long May it continue!

Anybody know how referees calculate added time? Referee today played 7 minutes injury time, whereas referee in the Cork Limerick hurling game played 4 minutes, in a game with far more stoppages. Is there any formula for calculating injury time, or just depends on a referee's whim? Referee at minor game today was brutal, gave a free out to Dublin allowing them to equalize, after a Cork forward was blatantly pulled down. And the GAA's CEO is wondering why Gaelic football is unwatchable?

Correction! 1964 they beat Kilkenny by 5-14 to 2-8. Kilkenny defending champions at the time. In 1965 they beat Wexford 2-16 to 0-10. Truly a great team!
