Leitrim club reveals groundbreaking female manager appointment

A Leitrim club has gone against the grain by appointing a female as their new men’s intermediate football team manager.

Melvin Gaels have named former Sligo ladies football captain Nicola Brennan as their new manager following Mick Calvey’s recent departure. According to Ocean FM, the Tourlestrane club member isn’t the first female to take charge of a men’s team in Leitrim, with Maureen McTernan having managed Glencar/Manorhamilton’s junior side in 1999.

A win over Aughavas in their final group match next weekend would qualify the Gaels for the knockout stages of the Leitrim IFC.

“Melvin Gaels would like to welcome Nicola Brennan to the club as manager of the men’s intermediate football team. We travel to Aughavas next Sunday for round four of the championship. We wish Nicola and the lads the best of luck in the games ahead. Gaeil na Meilge abú,” the club said about the groundbreaking appointment.
