The funeral took place in Birr yesterday of Susan Whelahan, wife of Pat-Joe and mother of Brian, Simon and Barry.
A native of Coolderry, Susan (nee Dooley) took immense pride in witnessing her family’s achievements with Birr and Offaly. Pat-Joe was manager when Birr won four All-Ireland and seven Leinster club hurling titles between 1991 and 2007. He also managed Limerick between 2003 and ’05.
As well as starring for Birr, Brian, Simon and Barry enjoyed much success with Offaly, with the former considered to be one of the greatest hurlers of all-time and being selected on the GAA’s Hurling Team of the Millennium.
