Murphy bows out on a high

Cork midfielder Juliet Murphy has retired for the second time in three months.

The inspirational Donoughmore midfielder announced her retirement from intercounty football in June but subsequently had a change of heart and was instrumental in the Rebelettes' run to a third successive All-Ireland crown (and eighth in nine years)

But she confirmed after Sunday's TG4 All-Ireland Ladies SFC final victory over Monaghan that it was was "definitely" her last game for the county.

Thirty-three-year-old Murphy made her Cork debut against Kerry in 1996 and went on to amass eight All-Ireland senior medals, nine Munster titles, a Footballer of the Year gong and five All Stars to date (with another one likely to follow!).

Murphy's return to the fold came after Cork had lost twice to Kerry and she subsequently helped inspire the team to victories over Armagh, Dublin, Kerry and Monaghan.

She contributed two points from play at Croke Park on Sunday as Monaghan were ousted by a single point in a tense finale.
