The eagerly awaited 2021 Cavan senior, intermediate and junior football championships get underway this coming Thursday, September 2nd.
After Templeport’s four-point victory over Denn in the postponed 2020 JFC final last Sunday, this year’s club championships are ready to commence with Crosserlough set to open their senior title defence against Ramor United on Thursday evening.
The Kilnaleck men deliver the club’s first SFC crown in 48 years last October by defeating Kingscourt Stars in a replay and will battle the 2016 winners at Kingspan Breffni (throw-in 8pm) to raise the curtain for this year’s club championship competitions, with Denn and Kill Shamrocks locking horns in the junior championship opener at the same time at Our Lady of Lourdes Park, Mullahoran.
Newly crowned ACFL Division 1 champions Gowna face Killygarry at the same venue the following evening, while Mullahoran will host an intermediate championship derby between Arva and Killeshandra, and in the junior section its Kildallan versus Swanlinbar in Bawnboy and Maghera against Knockbride in Mullagh. All four of those games throw-in at 8pm.
On Saturday evening, three games are down for decision in the senior championship – Lavey v Castlerahan in Crosskeys, Kingscourt Stars v Shercock in Bailieborough and Laragh United v Lacken in Crubany. All three throw-in at 6pm.
Killinkere and Ballymachugh battle it out in the intermediate clash at Kingspan Breffni (throw-in 4pm) the same day, while Ballyhaise and Cootehill meet at the Cavan Town venue three hours later. In the junior championship, Munterconnacht and Redhills cross swords at Emmett Park, Butlersbridge at 6pm that evening.
Sunday sees just one game in the senior championship as Ballinagh and Cavan Gaels tangle in Lacken at 1pm and in the intermediate championship it’s newly promoted Templeport against Cornafean (1pm), competition favourites Cuchulainns against Belturbet (4pm) and a derby between last year’s beaten finalists Butlersbridge and Drumlane (7pm). All three of those IFC encounters are fixed for Kingspan Breffni.
Drumgoon and Bailieborough is the other intermediate clash down for decision on Sunday afternoon in Knockbride (1pm), while there are two junior championship meetings (both at 1pm) between Drung and Drumalee at PJ Duke Park, Stradone and Mountnugent and Shannon Gaels in Killeshandra.
