CORNAFEAN CLUB NOTES

U 14....Boys...Well done on their good win over Killygarry in the Championship on Saturday...

U 14 Girls....Well done also to the girls who made the long trip to Killinkere on Thursday evening and came away with a convincing victory...…

U 12 FINAL......Best of luck to the U 12 Cornafean Lads who in Breffni Pk this Thursday evening will contest the Co final against Castlerahan. The game is down for decision at 6.30 pm so Please everyone come out and support the Team and Management .

LADIES UPDATE......The Ladies had a tough match against Crosserlough on Sunday morning in Cornafean and after a great effort unfortunately came out the wrong side of a 3..13 to 3...6 scoreline.Crosserlough had the advantage of a very strong wind early in the game and certainly made it count on the scoreboard but the Reds did not surrender and a goal apiece from K Johnson and R Barry gave the team hope.Cornafean actually went a point up early in the 2nd half and unfortunately had chances to extend their lead which were not taken and their opponent with many experienced players made them pay with late goals to win the game. The girls wil have the opportunity to make up for the disappointment and also to avenge their recent Co Final defeat when the take on Kingscourt on this Sunday in another important League fixture...

JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL....CORNAFEAN 1..10 SHANNON GAELS...1 08. Cornafean are back in the Junior Championship final of 2016 after a thrilling victory over the men from Blacklion in Breffni Park on Saturday evening. After a very productive first half where the Reds were the better team they struggled somewhat in the second period as Shannon Gaels launched their inevitable comeback but the deservingly held out for a welcome 2pt victory and the team and management have to be congratulated on reaching another Co Final. They now play Ballymachugh on Sunday week for the Sean Leddy Cup in what is another mouth watering prospect.Cornafean were out of the blocks early and looking sharp in all areas with cracking early points from Barry Doyle,Liam Duignan and Mark Johnson with the men from the west not registering their first point until the fifteenth minute. An excellent ball over the top after great work from half back P Woods caught the Gaels defence napping and Andrew Smith made no mistake rolling the ball into the net and putting the Reds in a commanding position 20 min in.Jack Wharton kicked a great score from forty metres with Shannon Gaels replying with a brace thus leaving Cornafean up by six at the break.Tom o,Reilly,s men were a different proposition after the break and inspired by the talented Nevin O Donnell who scored a cracker of a goal managed to level proceedings and a place in the final was now well and truly in the melting pot.Step forward Barry Doyle who managed to steady the ship with a free and crucially at this juncture the Gaels men also lost a player to a straight Red card. The game was swinging back in the Reds favour now and when the excellent Andrew Wharton kicked two pts with time nearly up Co final day was appearing on the horizon.Shannon Gaels never gave up replying with a couple of scores but Cormic Geoghean closed out the game for the Reds with a good pt and after a some what rocky Championship road the Team and Mangement deserve their day out at the Co Final on the 25th of September. We congratulate and wish them well on the big day.....

Minors Defeated... Hard luck to the Minor Lads who were defeated by a strong Laragh  team in the quarter finals of the Div 2 Championship on Tuesday evening last. The  Reds started the game in positive fashion with an early point from Aodhagan Smith but Laragh signalled their intentions with some well worked scores of their own to forge into an early lead. Ciaran Cosgrove and Aodhagan kept the Reds in touch with good points but with the  concession of two quick fire goals around the 20 minute mark  the Team were now facing an uphill task to stay in  the game.Cornafean were now having to work overtime to  compete with a rampant opponent who was growing in confidence  but in fairness to the Reds the stuck at it and a well worked goal early in the 2nd half from  Christopher Smith  gave the team renewed hope but almost immediately Laragh responded with two goals to end the game as a contest. In fairness the Reds battled on with two consolation goals at the death from  Jack Trainor and Ciaran Cosgrove  but Laragh were a formidable opponent and deserved their victory.Again  hard luck to the team who gave it their all and thanks to Seamus , Andrew  and Jack for their time and effort.....Team...D Duffy, J Carthwright,BSheridan,E Brady, S Halton, C Cullen,D Cosgrove CSmith C Sheridan C Cosgrove,S Doyle,D Kilkenny,J Traynor,A Smith P Martin...Subs,S Cullivan,C Mc Philips P Hogan...
