September 23, 2013
Drumgoon 1 - 10
Denn 1 - 09
Drumgoon and Denn met in a very entertaining match on Saturday afternoon last in Lavey. Played in ideal conditions Drumgoon got off to a flyer and soon ran into an early lead.
Denn put up a gallant fight and drew level in the final minutes and set up a pulsating finish. In the opening stages Drumgoon looked much the sharper team, and soon went into the lead through their excellent number 11, Conor Moynagh. Good play at midfield by Jim Mc Nally resulted in two difficult frees, which Keith Fannin duly slotted over. Paddy Mc Cabe extended Drumgoons lead further, before Denn opened their account, with a long range effort from Noel Crowe. Full forward Padraig Mc Govern got on the scoreboard before Colin Kiernan, kicked over the first of his 6 points all kicked from the ground, all from around the 45 metres. After good approach work from Edward Gaffney, Paddy Cabe added to Drumgoon score from the resultant free, to leave the scoreline 6 points to 4 in Drumgoons favour at half time. Following on the re-start Keith Fannin extended Drumgoons lead with a well taken free and Denn hit back with a goal from Shane Rehill, to draw the sides level for the first time in the match. With Jim Mc Nally and Michael Mc Donald getting the upper hand at midfield, Drumgoon continued to press and their lead was restored through a free from Keith Fannin. A strong run forward by full back Killian Moynagh, found his brother Conor and Conor drove forward coming in from way out on the right and shoot low and hard to net, much to the delight of the large Drumgoon attendance. Drumgoon went further ahead when Michael Mc Donald shot over from virtually centre field. Denn then staged a magnificent comeback, and 4 unanswered free from Colin Kiernan, brough them right back into the game. With time running out, Noel Crowe pointed for Denn to bring the sides level. The crowd were now very vocal in exhorting their respective side forward. Michael Hannon broke up a Denn attack and found corner back Edward Gaffney overlapping, and Edward stole forward and cleverly fisted the ball over the bar, for what turned out to be the winning point. Denn laid siege to the Drumgoon goal, but the full back line held out and ensured senior football for the Drumgoon side again next year.
