Cornafean notes
July 29, 2013
Bruce Ramble : The 5km walk/run will take place on Friday 23rd August. Further details will follow.
U12 Group 1 League Final : Well done and congratulations to the Cornafean U12 footballers on their recent win in the Group 1 League Final against a very fancied Cootehill side played at the Redhills venue in glorious sunshine. The Reds started the game in very positive mood, which seemed to surprise Cootehill, and they maintained this momentum throughout, although pushed to their limits by a very resolute opposition. Cian McPhillips made a number of vital saves in goal at crucial periods of the game and the back quartet of Jason McIntyre, Chloe McGauraghan, Shane Halton and Pete Hogan were all outstanding throughout, thwarting wave after wave of Cootehill attacks. Cuilinn McSeain, captain of the team and Jack Traynor controlled the middle of the park for the Reds providing the mobile and talented forward line of Dean Kilkenny, Deirbhile McCaffrey, Emma McGahern and Daniel Brady with a plentiful supply of the ball to put Cootehill to the sword and bring an U12 title to Cornafean. Peter Doyle was excellent on his introduction and a very big thank you to the team's mentors of Ciaran Martin, Rory McSeain and Killian O'Reilly for all their hard work and effort with the team over the past number of months. To the rest of the panel Emmet Martin, Wayne Sheridan, Michael Martin, Amy McIntyre, Ryan Morrow, Ronan Traynor, Daniel Madigan and Hazel Sheridan congratulations and well done for your efforts over the year.
Division 3 U16 League Final : After a thrilling semi-final victory over Templeport when the Cornafean boys snatched the victory from the jaws of defeat, their reward was a meeting with Gowna in the league final played at the Killeshandra venue recently. Luck, however, was not on the Reds side this time as they struggled against a strong Gowna outfit for long periods and never established any foothold in the game. The injury to Aodghan Smith early on in the game did not help Cornafean's problems but Jason Miney, Sean Brady and Ryan Kiernan worked tirelessly to stop the Gowna onslaught. Daniel Cullivan had his moments in the middle of the pack and up front Shane Doyle, James McGahern and Conor Sheridan worked overtime to try and keep the Reds in touch. Gowna, however, were not to be denied and deserved their victory on the night. The Cornafean lads will be disappointed but the future looks bright as there are many excellent prospects on the panel and no doubt there will be better days ahead. A big thank you to Liam Young, Wayne Johnson and David Egan for their dedication to the team over the past year.
Ulster Champion: Huge congratulations to Eamon Maguire, Bruse who was crowned Ulster Fleadh Champion in storytelling in Dromore, Co Tyrone on Sunday last. Eamon proved very popular and worthy winner. Also congratulations to Bronagh Sweeney, Killeshandra CCE who won Banjo 15-18 competition, they now go on to represent Cavan in the All Ireland in Derry.
Cornafean Marching Band : The Cornafean Marching Band which reformed for one last time as part of the very successful "Gathering" in Cornafean were in action on Friday night last in Arva as part of the opening of the "Three Provicences Festival" which is currently in full swing. As many of the older members of the bank paraded down the town witnessed by a large crowd, it would have brought back many memories of events the bank played at in Arva over 30 years ago so it really was a unique occasion. Many of the younger musicians from the area joined the band for the night and judging by the reaction from a very appreciative crowd it proves marching bands are still very popular on whatever occasions they perform at.
Junior Championship : Cornafean take on Knockbride on Friday August 2nd at 8pm in Mullahoran. All support welcome.
