Ballyhaise were pushed all the way by Drumgoon in Round 2

Ballyhaise made it two wins from two in the intermediate championship yesterday afternoon as goals from Shane McKiernan and Padraig Moore helped them to a 2-8 to 1-9 win over Drumgoon in Cootehill.

The 2015 champions made their majors count big time against the Boyle Park outfit, with McKiernan’s strike on the half-hour marking cancelling the one they’d conceded 14 minutes in via Barry Cooney.

Michael Brady’s injury-time point was all that stood between the sides at half-time (1-5 to 1-4) as point from Conor Moynagh early in the restart looked to keep Drumgoon in touch.

Brady made it a two-point game again prior to Moore firing home on 45 minutes to put some real daylight between the teams and all but leave Ballyhaise with one foot in the quarter-finals.

Ballinagh bounced back from their opening loss to Belturbet by seeing off Drumlane in what was a real battle at Kingspan Breffni.

Donal Monahan struck 2-1 for the junior champions but it wasn’t enough as goals either side of half-time from Thomas Moore and Cormac Timoney served to help Ballinagh towards a crucial 2-14 to 2-11 victory in their quest for the Tommy Gilroy Cup.

Ramor United also got up and running with a 3-10 to 2-9 win over Ballymachugh in Munterconnacht, while Saturday’s sole game in this competition saw no separating Laragh United and Butlersbridge.

It finished 0-13 apiece at Annalee Park, Ballyhaise, where Jason Walsh fired over an injury-time point to rescue the Stradone men a share of the spoils.

Laragh had led by 0-7 to 0-5 at the half but injury-time points from Cavan forward Caoimhin O’Reilly (2) and Fergal Flanagan (free) had the Bridge snatching victory until Walsh’s late intervention.

Arva and Cuchulainns also ended all square as Kevin Bouchier’s late free saw it finish 0-18 to 2-12 at Our Lady of Lourdes Park, Mullahoran.

Seamus Clarke’s goal seven minutes in handed Cuchulainns the early initiative in what transpired into a thrilling contest, with Arva pulling points back from Bouchier and Brian Ellis to trim the deficit down to two (1-5 to 0-6) come half-time.

Ellis would help the 2016 winners storm in front early in the resumption with the gap moving out as far as five before the Mullagh men pulled back a sorely needed goal through Evan Doughty.

Bryan Magee’s superb point shot last year’s beaten finalists two in front in injury-time but there was a ‘never say die’ attitude about Arva which shone through in the dying minutes when Bouchier stood up and ensured they’d be sharing the points.

Cornafean and Killeshandra battled it out on Friday evening in Gowna, with the Reds coming from behind to secure a 2-14 to 2-10 win and the bragging rights over their neighbours.

The Leaguers' strong start saw them 1-3 to 0-1 up after nine minutes but they’d only lead by one at the interval as Cornafean kicked on in the second-half to back up their excellent start after overcoming Cuchulainns in Round 1.

Sean Og Lawlor’s injury-time goal also kept Belturbet on the winning path as they defeated Bailieborough by 2-8 to 1-8 at Kingspan Breffni.

Enda Henry’s goal helped the Rories to lead by 1-4 to 0-6 at the halfway stage and despite a good start to the second-half, they’d need Lawlor’s major in the 61st minute after the Shamrocks had clawed their way back to draw level in the final quarter. In the junior championship, Redhills got a second win under their belts after handing Kildallan a 4-11 to 2-10 defeat in Belturbet on Saturday evening.

The border men struck three of their goals in the first-half on the fantastic new surface at O’Moore Park, leaving the Ballyconnell side with a mountain to climb in the second-half.

Killinkere managed a Lazarus-like comeback to defeat Templeport by the minimum (3-12 to 1-17) at PJ Duke Park for their second win on the bounce.

Last year’s beaten finalists had trailed by as many as 11 points in this Sunday afternoon clash in Stradone before they netted a goal on the eve of half-time which gave them renewed life.

The would-be winners caught fire after that, with marksmen Emmet Fitzsimons and Peter McCabe leading them to a remarkable comeback victory.

Fellow contenders Denn got their first win of the campaign after seeing off Drung on a 1-12 to 0-11 score-line at Terry Coyle Park, while their conquers from last weekend Knockbride were pushed all the way in a 0-15 to 0-12 win over Munterconnacht in Maghera.

There was no separating Shannon Gaels and Mountungent as it finished 1-12 to 0-15 at O’Connell Park.

Mountungent had dominated the latter stages of the first-half to lead by 0-11 to 0-5 at the interval but their Blacklion counterparts came roaring back and hit the net in the fifth minute on injury-time to snatch a draw.

Also played in Drumlane was the meeting of Kill and Corlough which saw the Shamrocks cruising to a 5-18 to 0-8 win, while Drumalee were also comfortable in their 2-17 to 0-9 hammering of Maghera at Fay Park, Ballyjamesduff.
