Prayers are being sought for a rising Antrim GAA star who suffered a serious head injury in a road accident last Friday evening.

Seventeen-year-old Odhrán McKenna, who plays both hurling and football for St. John's GAC in west Belfast, was hospitalised after the car he was driving struck a tree on the Killead Road in Crumlin. A student at St. Mary's Grammar School, Odhrán has been involved with the Antrim minor football training squad this year and was named on the Antrim colleges hurling panel. His twin brother CJ is also a dual player with club and county.

A statement posted on the St. John's GAC website read: "Firstly they would like to thank everyone worldwide who have sent messages of support to Odhrán. The GAA truly is the greatest family in the world.

"Odhrán sustained a serious head injury in an RTC and as a result has been sedated to try and give him the best possible chance of a full recovery. We expect Odhrán to remain sedated until Monday evening.

"Anyone who knows Odhrán will know he is a battler on the pitch. He is fighting his biggest battle ever at the minute. No better man. Keep praying . Go raibh maith agaibh'

"Please continue to keep Odhrán and the McKenna family in your prayers."
