The late Lieutenant colonel Jack Griffin.

The Thurles Sarsfields club has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of senior hurling selector Jack Griffin.

The 47-year-old lieutenant colonel died after he was struck by a car at Turtulla Cross near Thurles on Saturday afternoon. The tragedy comes a week before Sarsfields face Na Piarsaigh in the Munster club SHC semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds.

Jack served on numerous overseas missions with the Defence Forces in Africa and the Middle East and was most recently based in Brussels where worked with other EU military staff.

Paying tribute to the highly-regarded army man who was a former player and coach with Sarsfields, club secretary Thomas Callanan said in the Irish Independent: "Jackie would have come up through the ranks. He would have won a county minor hurling title in 1985 and then would have progressed and played as a senior.

"His army background lent itself to him getting involved in terms of physically preparing teams and in the last few years he was involved with the senior team when they won the two county finals."
