The 2015 O'Byrne Cup football competition could be set to start in 2014 if a Leinster Council recommendation gets the green light.

The news was discussed at the June meeting of the Meath County Committee in Meath Hill last night.

Meath delegate to the provincial body, Brian Carberry said there was a recommendation that the O'Byrne Cup commence before Christmas but matches would not be played in midweek.

According to Carberry, the Leinster Council also felt that it would be 'politically incorrect' to exclude college teams from the competition. However, Navan O'Mahonys delegate Pat Smyth suggested that college teams to be omitted as they had their own competitions and were also involved with their clubs and county under-21 teams.

It is proposed that next year's Kehoe Cup hurling competition will be run off on a different format and will only include teams from Leinster.
