Pay-per-view championship games on the way?

March 27, 2014

The GAA has confirmed that subscription channel Sky Sports will broadcast 14 championship games in each of the next three years
Gaelic football and hurling fans may have to part with their hard earned cash if they want to watch some of this year's All-Ireland championship games on TV.

The Irish Independent reports that negotiations between the GAA and Sky Sports are at an advanced stage and could result in armchair viewers having to pay a subscription to see their county in action.

It is understood that RTE will continue as the main rights holder, but several other stations, including Sky, have expressed an interest in broadcasting games and the deal could see Sky screen 10 matches, including two All-Ireland quarter-finals.

GAA president Liam O' Neill refused to confirm or deny Sky's interest when quizzed on the subject yesterday.

"There's a process going on at the moment and to speak about it would be unfair to those involved. It's tied up in a legal process," he said.

"The process is nearing completion and we look forward to an announcement as soon as we possibly can."
