Soccer pitch ploughed up on GAA instructions

April 03, 2009
A soccer pitch in Kerry was ploughed up by order of the GAA in a dispute over the use of the Castlemaine sportsfield. The field has been used for over 20 years by the Castlemaine soccer club but recently Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA Club received planning permission to redevelop the ground for GAA purposes with floodlights and new dressingrooms. The land is in GAA trust with the local club claiming ownership of the field, something that other local groups dispute. The ground was ploughed under darkness and Kerry county board chairman confirmed to the Kerryman paper that this was done on order from the GAA. "The property belongs to the GAA and there's no debate about ownership as there is documentation there," Conway told the Kerryman. "Of course the field was ploughed by the GAA". "The long term objective is to develop the pitch properly as there is a slope on it. We have been given a directive by Croke Park to use the property according to the rules and that's what we are doing." A hole was dug in the Milltown/ Castlemaine's GAA pitch on Saturday night in what seemed to be an act of retribution and the groups fighting the GAA's decision to take control of the land have promised to take the case to the courts.
