Down inflicted Westmeath with their first loss of the Allianz Football League campaign (2-15 to 1-15) this evening in Newry to move to the top of the Division 3 table.

Ryan Magill’s goal in the run up to half-time at Pairc Esler saw the Mourne men go in with a 1-10 to 0-5 lead and they’d extend their advantage early in restart.

Scores from Ceilum Doherty, Adam Crimmins, Daniel Guinness and Pearse McPolin outweighed Brian Cooney’s effort at the other end four minutes into the second-half.

Robert Forde pulled back a free for Westmeath after that, but it’d be wiped out by John McGeogh’s goal which made it 2-14 to 0-7 with 15 minutes remaining and, despite a late push from the visitors, which included a Jack Duncan goal, a late Doherty point put a seal on a third successive victory for Conor Laverty’s charges.

In Portlaoise, Laois bagged their first win of the Division 3 campaign by seeing off Sligo on a 0-18 to 1-8 scoreline.

The hosts were dominant in the opening half-hour, building up a 0-12 to 0-3 lead before Luke Casserly grabbed a sorely needed goal for the Yeats men before half-time.

Scores from Canice Mulligan and Jack Lavin (two-pointer) trimmed the Connacht side’s deficit down to three ahead of Laois getting motoring again with Rioghan Murphy (0-5) and Evan O’Carroll (0-6) to the fore for them as they bagged both points.
