Nelson vacates Meath ladies football role

Meath manager Davy Nelson

Davy Nelson has stepped down after just eight months in charge of back-to-back All-Ireland ladies football champions Meath.

The news comes after a disappointing Lidl National League Division 1 campaign yielded just one win, while the Royals also lost the Leinster final to Dublin last weekend. There is already speculation that his predecessor Eamonn Murray could return as manager ahead of Meath's opening All-Ireland defence away to Waterford on Sunday, June 25.

"With regret Meath LGFA announce that the county senior management will not be taking the team forward to the TG4 All-Ireland Series Group B games against Waterford and Donegal," a county board statement read.

"The county board wish to place on record our sincere gratitude to manager Davy Nelson, head coach Mark Brennan and the entire coaching and backroom team for their commitment and work during the 2023 season."

Nelson previously guided Navan O'Mahony's to four Meath SFC titles and also won a Monaghan SFC crown with Latton O'Rahilly's.
