At a time when abuse of referees has been brought into sharp focus by some high-profile incidents around the country, it's great to hear about a match official in Westmeath who administered first aid on an U15 player and possibly saved his life last Saturday.

Kilbeggan Shamrocks referee and paramedic Kieran Daly has been hailed as a hero after coming to the aid of a young Inny Shamrocks player after he collapsed during the U15FC final against Lilliput Gaels in Kinnegad. Ballinagore clubman and garda Enda Kenny was on linesman duty and assisted in the procedure.

"I went into paramedic mode and Enda went into Garda mode," Kieran said.

The young players adult club Ballynacargy provided a positive update on his condition in a Facebook post: "Initial reports are that Killian is doing well in hospital and everyone involved with the club wishes him a speedy recovery.

"The fast action of referee Kieran Daly must also be acknowledged. Kieran was very quick to notice something was wrong, immediately stopped the game and provided first aid to Killian. Thanks also to Lilliput Gaels and Kinnegad officials for their assistance."
