Knockmore's quest for a three-in-a-row of Mayo SFC titles suffered a setback yesterday when they were surprisingly beaten by Ballina Stephenites.

Goals from Dylan Thornton, Evan Regan and Conor McStay helped the home side to a 3-9 to 0-11 second round victory which leaves Ray Dempsey's side having to win their next match to stay in the race for the Moclair Cup.

Aghamore defeated Ballaghaderreen by 3-14 to 2-8 in the other game in the group on Saturday evening thanks to green flags from Conor Byrne, Darren Duffy and Ross Egan.

Breaffy and Westport maintained their impressive starts to the championship. Stephen McDermott scored 1-3 in Breaffy's 1-13 to 0-8 victory over Balla, while Lee Keegan and Finbar McLaughlin fired goals in Westport's 2-11 to 0-9 defeat of Ballintubber, who lost Cillian O'Connor to a knee injury at half-time.

Elsewhere, there were wins for their first wins for last year's intermediate champions Mayo Gaels and Claremorris over The Neale and Belmullet respectively. Former kingpins Castlebar Mitchels accounted for Davitts by 0-17 to 2-9, while Paul Towey scored 0-10 for Charlestown as they drew with Garrymore.
