Cavan Gaels had minimal fuss in picking up their second win in as many weekends by trouncing Mullahoran to edge closer towards to the quarter-finals of the Cavan senior football championship.
It finished 1-20 to 0-4 at Kingspan Breffni, where Gaels talisman Gearoid McKiernan once again proved too much for the opposition to handle.
The Cavan star registered 1-5 over the hour, equalling his 0-8 tally from last weekend’s win over Crosserlough, with his goal coming in the 54th minute.
Keenan Donohoe, McKiernan and Padraig Sexton pointed to Gaels towards a 0-6 to 0-2 half-time lead and after the turnaround they’d hit another gear, outscoring their Longford border opponents by 0-9 to 0-2 before McKiernan hammered home.
Earlier in the day, Killygarry secured back-to-back wins by overcoming Ballinagh on a 1-13 to 1-6 score-line in Crosskeys.
Conor Smith’s point nudged the Crubany men 0-4 to 0-3 in front after 10 minutes and they’d land the first hammer blow seconds via an Oisin Brady goal.
The victors kicked on for a 1-9 to 0-6 half-time lead from there and, while Ballinagh pulled back a goal late on, the points of Darragh Lovett, David Talbot and Enda Gallen would safely secure two more points for Killygarry.
Tomorrow (Sunday) sees three more games down for decision in the race for the Oliver Plunkett Cup, with holders Ramor United playing Butlersbridge in Lavey (2pm), Laragh United up against Gown in Ballinagh (4pm) and Crosserlough taking on Lacken at Kingspan Breffni (7pm).
