Exactly 25 years ago today, Cavan defeated Derry in Clones to capture what was their first Ulster senior football championship title in 28 long years.

Managed by Donegal maestro Martin McHugh, the Breffni men scored a magnificent 1-14 to 0-16 victory over the Oak Leafers in the provincial decider, with substitute Jason O'Reilly netting the only goal of the game.

There was pure ecstasy at St Tiernach's Park as the historic venue was transformed into a sea of blue, with joyous Cavan supporters flooding onto the pitch to salute their heroes as captain Stephen King proudly hoisted the Anglo-Celt Cup.

Paidi O Se’s Kerry side would defeat the Blues in the All-Ireland semi-finals in Croke Park and went on to land the Sam Maguire Cup before both teams travelled out to New York in October for a National League game to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1947 All-Ireland final at the Polo Grounds.

Having captured the Anglo-Celt Cup again in November 2020 by upsetting Donegal in Armagh, Cavan remain head and shoulders above the rest on Ulster's Roll of Honour with 40 titles, as Monaghan and Tyrone sit tied in second place having won the northern province just 16 times each.
