MacHale Park pitch to be extended as part of major redevelopment works

The MacHale Park pitch is set to be extended as part of a major plan to redevelop the playing surface, with work expected to begin after Mayo's Connacht SFC title defence.

It will involve the spreading of 1,000 tonnes of Wexford sand; re-seeding of the entire surface; installation of lateral drains; the pitch will be made five metres longer at the Davitt House end; and installation of new ball nets behind the goals at the same end.

Mayo county board hope to have the redevelopment works completed by mid-summer but the pitch will remain closed until April 2022 to allow the new surface to bed in and settle.

The Castlebar venue will be unavailable to host the knockout stages of the 2021 Mayo clubs football and hurling championships while it's hoped it will be ready for the start of next year's Allianz League campaign.
