Cian Lynch paid an emotional tribute to his late uncle, Paul Carey, after helping Limerick to victory in yesterday's All-Ireland SHC final against Waterford.
A brother of the legendary Limerick hurler Ciaran, Paul Carey, tragically died in a car accident in Dubai last month. Paul lined out for the county alongside Ciaran and won three Limerick SHC titles with his beloved Patrickswell.
"The last few weeks especially - those games have given my immediate family great sense of joy and a distraction from the reality of things. Just to mention Paul - he was a massive role model to me as a person," Lynch said, when speaking to Marty Morrissey on RTÉ Radio's Morning Ireland this morning.
"I always allude to it – we have to enjoy every moment we have here because no one knows what’s around the corner. That just epitomises it. It’s just appreciating each other and I’m blessed with the family I have and the support here in Patrickswell."
The 24-year-old, who is consistently one of the star performers in John Kiely's Liam MacCarthy Cup winning side, added: "As I’ve always said, I’ve massive faith. I know Paul and everyone else that we’ve lost along the way, there’s a few other people within the team that have lost family members over the last few weeks.
"They pull us through these hard times and guide us. To every other family across the country who’ve lost people, whether it’s due to Covid, or other ways or means, we’re thinking of you and stay strong."
