Unique GAA medal collection up for auction

April 24, 2020

Leonard McGrath is a legend of Galway GAA.

The medal collection of one of the GAA's most decorated players of all time is expected to fetch up to €20,000 in an online auction with Co. Kilkenny based auctioneers Fonsie Mealy from Monday 27 April to Tuesday 5 May.

An accomplished dual-star, Australian born Leonard McGrath made his inter-county debut for Galway in 1922 and was part of the county's first ever All-Ireland SHC winning team, a year later.

He also helped the Tribesmen capture their maiden All-Ireland SFC title in 1925, which saw him make history in becoming the first Galway player to win both Celtic Crosses, a unique feat yet to be matched and only accomplished by 15 others in the GAA.

McGrath excelled at rugby too and was later expelled from the GAA under the infamous Rule 27 for playing 'foreign games'.
