Hugh McFadden says Donegal will have to defeat neighbours Tyrone on Saturday week to guarantee their Division One survival.

The Ulster champions, who won Division Two last year, boosted their survival hopes with a thumping victory over Monaghan on Sunday, a win which sees them move up the table to fifth place, level on points with the Farney men but with a vastly-superior points difference as well as head-to-head advantage.

With two rounds of games left, pointless Meath are already relegated, while Mayo lie second-from-bottom on three points. Although Declan Bonner’s men are in a stronger position than relegation-threatened Mayo or Monaghan, midfielder McFadden feels the job isn’t done yet:

“Given the Tyrone result against Dublin, we’re still going to have to beat Tyrone in Ballybofey to make sure we’re safe,” the Killybegs man told The Irish News. “Tyrone are a fantastic team, it just shows the resolve they have after coming off that defeat against Galway to go and beat Dublin. Given the conditions it was very impressive.

“But this was a very important victory [against Monaghan]. Obviously after the disappointment of two defeats in a row against Galway and Dublin, it was very important to get the two points.”
