Limerick SHC final: Captain Lynch leads by example

Patrickswell's Cian Lynch celebrates

Na Piarsaigh’s reign as Limerick senior hurling champions is over after they finished second best to a well drilled Patrickswell outfit at the Gaelic Grounds today.

Ciaran Carey’s charges edged the Treaty County’s blue riband event on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-15.

Josh Considine pounced for the game’s only goal with a powerful strike in the 15th minute and that score helped established a 1-9 to 0-6 interval lead for the team in blue and gold.

As you would expect from a team of Na Piarsaigh’s calibre, they refused to throw in the towel and six points without reply after the resumption got them back on level terms by the 47th minute.

Peter Casey was posing plenty of problems for the eventual winners defence at that stage and the momentum appeared to be very much in Na Piarsaigh’s favour.

Diarmaid Byrnes calmed Patrickswell nerves somewhat when opening their second-half account in the 53rd minute and Aaron Gillane converted a free shortly after to put them two clear.

‘Hurler of the Year’ Cian Lynch grew in prominence as the game progressed and he sent over two points to give his team some breathing space and they pushed on to claim a first title since 2016.

Midfielder Lynch certainly played a captain’s part with three points overall while Gillane and Considine finished with 0-6 (all frees) and 1-2 respectively.

At the opposite end of the field, Casey raised seven white flags (six from play) for Michael Ryan’s men but his efforts proved to be in vain.

The result sees the 'Well move one clear of Ahane at the top of the roll of honour on 20 outright successes.
