Liam Kearns has stepped down as Tipperary football manager after four years in charge.

The Tralee man, who previously managed Limerick and Laois, announced his departure after Tipp's All-Ireland SFC first round qualifier defeat to Down in Newry this afternoon. It followed a surprise Munster SFC first round exit at the hands of Limerick last month and relegation to Division 3 of the Allianz League in the spring.

While this season was a disappointment, Kearns enjoyed many great days with the Premier County, most notably in 2016 when he led them to the Munster final before embarking on a memorable backdoor run which culminated in an All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Mayo.

Kearns guided Tipp to an Allianz League Division 3 title in 2017, but their fortunes have nosedived since. His selectors Paul Fitzgerald and Shane Stapleton have also resigned.
