McCrory backs "well capable" Canavan to shine

Darragh Canavan in action for St Ciaran's, Ballygawley

Tyrone defender Aidan McCrory believes that Darragh Canavan is more than capable of handling the pressures of senior inter-county football at just 18 years of age.

Canavan, son of football legend Peter, made his debut for Tyrone's seniors last month when the Red Hands defeated Derry by nine points in their McKenna Cup opener, coming off the bench in the second-half to register a point from play.

McCrory, who lined-out at centre-back against the Oak Leafers, reckons there’s plenty more to come from the Errigal Ciaran sensation and has been impressed with many of the youngsters to come into Mickey Harte’s squad recently.

“He’s his own man, a good footballer and well capable for it,” McCrory told the Ulster Herald.

“Young Matthew Murnaghan came on as well and he’s still at school. They are two level-headed young lads who have got long careers ahead of them and hopefully they will fit in as well.

“But all the new boys are going to put pressure on themselves to perform.

“They are all good enough footballers and they know they are here because they are good enough. They have to show that and they will be given game time to do that. All you can do is advise them to continue doing what has got them the call up to begin with.”

Next up for Tyrone is a date with Ulster University on Sunday in round two of the McKenna Cup at Healy Park, Omagh (throw-in 2pm).
