Championship bans overturned for Down clubs

November 24, 2018

A mass brawl breaks out during the Down Division 1 football league clash between Ballyholland and Downpatrick.

Down clubs Ballyholland Harps and RGU Downpatrick have successfully appealed the decision to bar them from participation in next year’s county championship.

The clubs made the headlines for all the wrong reasons when their league match was marred by violent scenes involving players and spectators.

In addition to individual suspensions, Down’s CCC had proposed that they should be excluded from the 2019 championship.

The Irish News reports that appeals by both clubs to the Hearings Committee have resulted in more lenient 24 weeks suspensions for their respective senior teams.

Those suspensions would expire in the middle of May and mean that their participation in the league would be affected.

They have also been hit with fines.

Both Ballyholland Harps and RGU Downpatrick now have the option of appealing this latest ruling to the Hearings Committee of Ulster GAA.
