Jim McGuinness says his former right hand man Rory Gallagher and the Fermanagh players deserve "great credit" for their triumph over Monaghan in Omagh last Sunday.

McGuinness, who guided his native Donegal to All-Ireland glory for the first time in 20 years in 2012, had a high profile fall-out with Gallagher (his eventual successor) at the end of the following season and the pair reportedly have not spoken since.

Writing in his column for The Irish Times, McGuinness lauded the Belleek native and his players after the shock victory at Healy Park.

"You have to give great credit to Rory Gallagher and Fermanagh. They stuck with the game plan and got a wee bit of luck with the goal that got them over the line but they created all the key moments in that game," he wrote.

"They will rightly feel that if they can keep the opposition to 0-10 in the Ulster final they will be champions. If they can hit that one target, they have a very good chance."
