McAteer embarrassed by media leaks

December 09, 2009
Down secretary Sean Og McAteer has condemned media leaks relating to James McCartan's appointment as senior football manager last September. In his report to Saturday's annual convention in Liatroim, McAteer also expresses his disappointment at the fact that former All-Ireland winning manager Pete McGrath learned of his unsuccessful candidacy through the media. "I would express disappointment that the press was used this year to embarrass the county," he writes. "I cite here in particular the announcement of the new senior football team management. As a member of the five-person selection panel, I was confident we had the choreography of the announcement correct in the way that we had set out to make the detail known. "To read news of the imminent appointment in the press on that Friday morning was embarrassed and very upsetting, not just for the candidates, but believe me, also for the people charged with the task of informing the candidates. "I wish to put on record that no-one had officially spoken to either of the candidates before this appeared in the press. To me, this episode was designed to embarrass and humiliate members of the selection panel."
