Match Report: Maghery v Dromintee
Unfortunately for us, our poor run in this year's league continued on Sunday past, when south Armagh outfit Dromintee collected two points for themselves while on call at the loughshore.
The visitors got their game off to a good start when they capitalised on an error by the Maghery keeper, registering an opportune goal in the opening minutes. Eamon Robinson fired over for Maghery at the other end of the pitch (3rd min), followed by a Seamus Forker point (5th min), reducing Dromintee's early lead to a point. Paul Forker had a great chance to put the ball away in the sixth minute, when he and another Maghery forward were on their own in behind the Dromintee defense, but his goal attempt was easily blocked and cleared by the visiting keeper.
A minute later and Dromintee had their first point of the game on the sheet. Maghery's next score came in the shape of a Stephen Cusack point. The defender started the move in his own back line and was on hand to finish the attack with a well taken score in the 11th minute of play. Then it was over to Cusack's cousin, Seamus Forker, his long range effort (13th min) was helped over the bar by the Dromintee goalie as it hung threateningly over the Dromintee square. When the visiting team hit over two more points, one from play in the 18th minute and the other from a free-in in the 21st minute, the scoreboard read Maghery 0-04, Dromintee 1-03. Dromintee increased their advantage to 3 points when they sent over a free in the 24th minute. And a minute later there were 4 in it when the south Armagh men sent over again. And there could have been a further 3 more in it only for a superb save pulled off by Dermot Fox, Maghery's goalie. Conor Forker recorded an injury-time point for the MacDermott's, but this was to be countered in the 33rd minute by a Dromintee free-in which floated over the bar.
HALF TIME SCORE: Maghery 0-05, Dromintee 1-06
.
Maghery got off to a lively second-half start. Substitute Stephen Fox collected round the middle of the field and soloed towards the Dromintee posts, but his shot went disappointingly wide from about 25 yards out. Maghery pressed forward again and when Seamus Forker and Kieran Rafferty combined well and were fast approaching the Dromintee square, Rafferty simply popped the ball over the Dromintee bar with his fist. A minute later and another Maghery attack was abruptly ended with a foul on Kieran Rafferty, and it was left to Seamus Forker to convert the resulting free-in. Dromintee added two more points to their total in the 10th and 11th minutes, nipping this Maghery resurgence in the bud and making the scoreboard read Maghery 0-07, Dromintee 1-08. A great move by the MacDermott's entering the final quarter of the match involved Darragh McConville, Stephen Cusack, Stephen Fox and Seamus Forker and resulted in the latter firing over, leaving the Dromintee goal the difference between the teams. However, the visitors added two more points to stretch their lead to five and Maghery found themselves seriously chasing this game with time ticking away. Forker again pulled one back for the loughsiders (24th min) and in doing so reduced Maghery's deficit to four. Stephen Cusack added another point for the MacDermott's two minutes later and there were three in it again. However, Maghery didn't make the most of any momentum they had managed to build up, while in contrast Dromintee redoubled their efforts. This determined Dromintee team just wouldn't let up and restored their 4 point lead a minute later. With time running out for Maghery, the MacDermott's pushed forward again and nearly had their efforts rewarded with a goal, but Shea Tennyson had his goal-shot 'foot blocked' in the vicinity of the Dromintee goal-mouth. Maghery weren't awarded their penalty for this illegal block and Dromintee went straight back up the field and sent over what was to be the closing score of the match.
FINAL SCORE: Maghery 0-10, Dromintee 1-12.
Maghery's scorers on the day were: Seamus Forker 0-05, Stephen Cusack 0-02, Kieran Rafferty, Conor Forker and Eamon Robinson 0-01 each.
The Larrybo Cusack and Rosemary Corr Tournament 2008
SATURDAY 21ST JUNE is the date set aside for Maghery's annual, and very successful, underage event - namely 'The Larrybo Cusack and Rolo Corr Tournament'. Youth teams representing the clubs of Wolfe Tones, Madden, St Paul's, St Mary's Aghagallon, St John's Annaghmore, Brackaville, Derrytresk and of course, Maghery will compete in a series of matches throughout the day, with the highlight being the two respective cup finals. Teams have been asked to assemble at Felix Hamill Park at 10.30am, ready for the 11am throw-in.
Maghery stalwart Dixie Robinson will, as in previous years, over-see the affair, well assisted by his group of helpers. There will be refreshments for the children during the course of the day, and popular group 'Revive 45' will be entertaining in the clubrooms that evening. Not only does this tournament provide invaluable sporting experiences for the young gaels participating, but it is a chance for our close-knit gaelic community in Maghery to remember two very special individuals who sadly are no longer with us, but whose memories will always be held dear.

Maghery Sean Mac Dermott's v Clan na Gael
North Armagh'B'semi-final
Wednesday 5 June @ Portadown
In damp conditions at Tir na nOg, this clash between the Maghery and Clans B teams started out as a fairly damp affair too. Both teams seemed to lack any edge or display any urgency during their first half performances and at the interval had registered 3 points a-piece. Michael McConville opened Maghery's account in the fifth minute before their Lurgan opponents equalised with a well taken free. While the MacDermott's were probably the most wasteful of the two teams in the opening quarter, it took an excellent interception by Maghery's Stephen Mc Corry in the back line to keep the ball out of the loughshore nets, when a Clans goal looked on.The next score was a Clans one, a fisted effort over the bar and they led 0 - 02 to 0-01. This lead was short-lived however, as Shea Tennyson drifted an excellent point over the Clans bar to level it for Maghery. Each team added one more each to the scoreboard before the interval, Maghery's from the boot of Michael Mc Conville again. HALF TIME SCORE: Maghery 0-03 Clans 0 -03. Maghery's second half got off to a lively start with Mc Conville finding the Clan Na Gael net after only two minutes of play. Shea Tennyson and Kevin Nugent added two more scores for Maghery over the course of the remainder of the game, but Clans added five more points to their tally and when the final whistle blew, the teams were level; Maghery with 1 goal and 5 points, Clans with 8 points. And so it went to extra time to determine who would be involved in this year's North Armagh B Championship Final. With some of Maghery's younger players putting in solid performances, namely Darragh McConville and Anthony Nugent, Maghery decided to call upon the services of two of their more experienced players; Martin Toye and Jim Robinson, to help push the current All-County B Champions' campaign over the finishing line. And the two 'ol hands' didn't disappoint! Toye won alot of ball all over the park and 'Jimbo' helped himself and Maghery to two great points. Over the extra time period, Maghery came to the fore and adding to Robinson's 2 points were scores from his nephew Shea Tennyson(0-01) and an impressive Stephen Hughes(0-02). In contrast Clan na Gael's impact on the game floundered and the town side only managed a single point in time added on. When man-in-the-middle, Gary Smith, blew time, Maghery found themselves through to the final with 4 to spare. FULL TIME SCORE: Maghery 1-10, Clan na Gael 0-09.
