Dunloy Cuchullains GAA club is in mourning following the passing of former player Tony McGrath on Monday after a short illness.
McGrath was a central figure in Dunloy’s breakthrough Antrim SHC success in 1990, scoring the late equalising point that forced a replay of the final against O’Donovan Rossa. Father of current players Anton and Eoghan, he also struck late to bring the 1995 All-Ireland Club SHC final against Birr to a replay.
Birr went on to win the replay, while the Cuchullains were also denied by Sixmilebridge in the 1996 Tommy Moore Cup decider.
“We are totally devastated to learn today of the passing of a past player and fervent Dunloy supporter Tony McGrath,” Dunloy said in a Facebook post.
“Tony, father of current senior players Anton and Eoghan and husband of past player Sally McGrath was a very familiar face around Pearse Park and wherever the green and gold were playing regardless of age or code.
“We use the word legend so frequently nowadays but never was it truer than when speaking about this man.
“A Rolls Royce of a hurler who gave us so many great days in the Dunloy colours, but more importantly a great and unassuming man who always had time for everyone no matter how young or old.
"His loss will be felt by our club/community and village for years to come. Our sincerest condolences go to Sally, Anton & Eoghan and the extended family circle. May he rest in peace.”
