Carlow booked their place in the preliminary quarter-finals of the Tailteann Cup thanks to a 2-13 to 1-14 victory over Longford in Portlaoise this afternoon.

Mikey Bambrick and Jamie Clarke (penalty) netted the first-half goals that proved key for Niall Carew’s men as they edged out the Midlanders to set-up a showdown against New York next weekend.

Sunday evening’s draw also confirmed that Longford will face Conor Laverty’s Down side in the competition’s preliminary quarter-finals, while Wexford play Offaly and Fermanagh meet Laois.

Wexford knocked out Leitrim earlier today with a 1-16 to 1-12 win at Parnell Park, where Ben Brosnan came off the bench to fire in an injury-time goal with the sides having been all square with six minutes to go.

Meanwhile, Antrim handed Fermanagh a 3-13 to 1-12 defeat at the Athletic Grounds to ensure they finished top of Group 4.

Late goals from Oisin Doherty and Ruiari McCann (St Mary’s) ensured Andy McEntee’s men the victory at the Armagh venue which sees them joining Cavan and Meath, with Limerick also progressing to the eight despite their surprise 2-14 to 1-10 loss to already eliminated Wicklow in the earlier game in Portlaoise.

Tailteann Cup preliminary quarter-finals:

Offaly v Wexford

Fermanagh v Laois

Down v Longford

Carlow v New York

*The matches will take place over the weekend of 10-11 of June and the times and venues will be confirmed by the CCCC tomorrow.
