Away all day - well in casualty for 20 hours - not a good experience. Anyway note all the great threads today and I don't mean clothes. Jeeze whats going on here - I know its close season and inter county teams aren't allowed train - but you are allowed post on GAA matters as far as I'm aware!! Sandwiches, girls, tae, hotdogs, salad!!!!

Time was when people tuned in from all over the world to HS - met most of them last night - for news of GAA matters. Now its food and drink. Shocking! And all just before Xmas!

Anyway my favourite song is the Pogues and Kirsty - Fairytale of New York! If I'm maudlin enough it can nearly bring a tear and thats before poor Kirsty's terrible tragedy - its a poignant and very Irish song. Also like Stay Another Day by East 17! Well it won't make you as hungry as the other threads :-)

ps Dubupnorth always saluted you guys for your work - last night reinforced it. Happy and safe Xmas to you and your colleagues looking after all the bowsies that dunno where to draw the line - many unfortunately!

well in casualty for 20 hours

Ah now Jayo nothing serious i hope, we can't afford to lose someone like you around here. If it makes you feel any better i was stuck working for 8 hours in the middle of O'Connell street right where all those abrasive, vociferous taximen lurk, its just no place for a primitive countryman like myself.

Now to answer your question, i was very conveniently listening to John Lennon's 'So This Is Christmas' when i first opened this thread and thats probably my favourite Xmas song. But to be honest i absolutely love cheesy xmas songs like 'Last Christmas' and 'Mistletoe and Wine' (and everyother cheesy song by Cliff, hes got a multitude of them).

BTW:
Fairytale of New York = excellent choice
Stay Another Day = excellent choice ;-)

2 great songs you mentioned there alright Jayo! Would definitely put the 2 of them in my top 3 fav Christmas songs of all time along with Silver Bells by Jim Reeves and that Johnny Mathis one - can't remember the name! Also have a grá for Las Vegas in the Hills of Donegal!

Fairytale has to be no. 1 alright, classic christmas tune but maybe a bit overplayed if that's possible?! All the usual festive tunes are great though, it really adds to the season, the aul christmas album always makes an appearance around this time!

Jayo, "in casualty for 20 hours".

Ah well, those old office parties and trying to dance to impress some young one....!!!! You have to remember your age lad !!

Best Xmas Songs.

1. Fairytale of New York.
2. Marys Boychild (Boney M version)
3. Walking in a Winter Wonderland.

Thanks Boc & Htaem - but even if I had split ends I'd be there that long! Had a bit of a scare but at 94 you're gonna get them aren't ya??? But will use the opportunity coming up to the mad season to remind you younger lads go easy, take it but take it handy. And if God forbid you end up in one of our warzones (A&Es) remember you are surrounded by angels ... and a few devils visiting! Alls well enough here and the undertaker has been told to cancel the 'Told Yis I Was Sick' inscription for the time being!

There has only been one good Christmas song. So that is my favourite.

Always loved 'fairytale of New York' as well lads. For some reason I always associate 'pipes of peace' by Paul McCartney as being a christmas song as well. Think it had something to do with the legendary football match played between the German & British troops on no mans land on christmas day 1914.

Jayo , hope whatever had you in casualty isn't too serious mate. Thanks for the nice remarks about the ambulance service. Nice to be appreciated. Most people we come across up here are sound enough , but like anywhere else you get the odd few who think were a big yellow taxi with flashing lights!!

Hope your not too badly shaken Jayo, never a good time for something like that but this time of year is worse than others.

On the topic of the post, has anyone on here ever hear Metallica's version of Carol of the Bells (with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra)? Unbelievable version of one the coolest sounding Christmas songs ever.

For all those people that made that happen, I hope you're all proud of yourself!!

I did know that holy, but surely the Christmas number one is now tarnished with all this X-Factor tripe that they keep producing! I think we should have a Hoganstand Xmas Song to try and beat them, lets ask Jayo to write it!!!

Good idea Bald Eagle, it would be sure to reach no. 1 in Ireland anyway! I wonder would it be too late to get it up and running in time for Christmas now though, maybe another Christmas tune could be covered. I reckon the famous Jim would be ideal for Shane McGowan's part in "Fairytale of New York".
