Pat Keenan Named as Erin Go Braghs New President
February 10, 2014
Pat Keenan has been named as Erin Go Braghs new club president. He takes over from Ellis Poynton. Ellis has been associated with the club as far back as the 1960s. Erin Go Bragh goes back to 1887, disbanding and reorganising on several occasions.
The club were junior football league runners up in 1906 and also competed with some success in cross county during the athletics revival of the early 1920s. Erin Go Bragh hosted a cross country race in 1921 starting at Blanchardstown court house. The club disbanded around 1922 and reformed around 1943. They were junior league runners up in 1945, disbanding sometime around 1947. Erin Go Bragh were re-organised in the 1950s by the parish priest of Porterstown Father Redmond, Paddy Downing of Clonsilla and James Lynam of Porterstown. They were located where St. Mochtas soccer club now play. The club only played at juvenile level with a single team, winning a minor league in 1963 of which Ellis was a member of the team. They disbanded again shortly after with most of the team joining St. Brigids and others joining a club called Maurice O'Neills who played their games in the Phoenix Park. Erin Go Bragh re-emerged in 1986 in Dromheath moving to Porterstown in 1996 before moving to Littlepace and Ongar in 2003.
Pat Keenan is well known in Dublin GAA circles. He previously played with Clann Colaiste Mhuire and St. Oliver Plunketts before joining Erin Go Bragh. He was a member of the Dublin junior football team who reached the All Ireland final in 1983 only to lose to Kerry in a replay. He only recently stopped playing football and hurling. He played an important role in Erin Go Braghs development off the pitch also. He was club vice chairman from 2001-2010 and club chairman from 1998-2000. He also held the position of Irish officer. His hard work was recognised by the club in 2008 when, along with Cecil Stephens he was awarded a lifetime achievement award.
