The reason behind the demise of Cavan football?

(Oldest Posts First)

Everyone knows that Cavan football is going through a rough spell,,,,What do you think is the real problem and what steps would you take to try and bring our proud county back to the glory days???

The root of the problem is at underage level, no sucess at minor level in god knows how many years. Compare tyrones sucess at underage and the resources they put into underage to that of cavan. No comparison really. More needs to be done from primary school level the whole way up through secondary school. St Pats in Cavan is an example, once a very strong McRory cup side but havent been competitive in 30 years.

I really think cavan have been very unlucky at minor level these past few years. take this year for example only edged out by eventual all-ireland champs tyrone by a point. We could have beat them. we were every bit as good as them. last year too we had a very good team. it's such a pity there is no back-door system for the minor pre-provincial final. if there was I think we could have been in Croker a few times in the last 5 years. We are talking about fine margins here I don't think there is a big problem at under-age level its just that the competition is so tough in ulster. there have been some great matches in minor championship this year even the St. joes v kingscourt match had some great passages of play even though that match wont be remembered for footballing reasons. i hope the county minor final will prove to be worthy of the occasion there are some fine players participating.

Could"nt agree more s.goldrick. No problems at u-age, its getting all these quality plaers to stay off drink and play senior football for their club, even in my club, many of the players that have represented their county have been going out the week of very important games, i think drink is the problem, and getting the players to senior level.
Any ideas of the minor team for the coming year?.. they got to the buncrana cup final, at u-16 level i heard, and there is a few very strong players on the u16 dev squad that will be on the panel, does anyone know?

Drink has been the scourge of Cavan football for many a year. Also emigration. Many of the players on the panel are small and light and lack guts as the Armagh game proved. Some of the present minors are big men and good footballers. These are the lads who should receive the specialist attention and special coaching. They should be kept together at all costs and allowed develop at their own pace, not rushed through like before. The football in Cavan is not as bad as many are led to believe. I attend games all over the north and east and the standard is no different, it is about confidence and belief. At minor level i believe that Regional teams should be started in addition to the minor c/ship and league to allow more promising players to shine and be spotted.
