Kearns seeks improvement
July 24, 2008
Laois manager Liam Kearns remains convinced there is a "big performance" in his team and is hoping they will produce it in this weekend's All-Ireland football qualifier against Down.
A defeat to the Mournemen, who thrashed Offaly by 18 points last Saturday, would almost certainly spell the end of the Kerryman's reign in the O'Moore County but he is hopeful that his under-performing side will rise to the challenge.
"On what they have done so far this year, Down will have to go into the game as favourites, there is no doubt about that," he said.
"We need to win on Saturday. I still think there is a big performance in this team. But if we beat Down that will be three championship wins this season and it will put us in the last 12 teams in the country.
"And after that you're only 70 minutes away from Croke Park."
Laois have been plagued by injury this season, but apart from midfielder Kevin Meaney, Kearns should have a fully-fit squad to pick from. The midlanders will also be boosted by the return of Padraig Clancy from suspension.
"We basically have everyone fit. Obviously they are all at different stages of fitness but they are all medically able to play at least.
"It's the first time in two years that we've had everyone."
