Win for Donard/Glen Camogie

July 21, 2008
Donard/Glen camogie girls played Ballinacor in Dunlavin in the Senior Championship on Sunday morning. Ballinacor needed to win this match to have any chance of reaching the County final, but their hopes were shattered by a stronger, fitter Donard team. Clair Whelan opened the scoring for D/G with a beautifully taken point into the swirling breeze with Sile Whelan adding another a few minutes later. A series of fine passes left Breda Walshe free in front of goals and she found the net 1-2 to no score, in fact it was almost half time before Nikki Carter pointed Ballinacor's first score from a free. Clair Whelan pointed again at the other end and Nikki Carter also got the final score of the half from another free in front of goals. Half time score 1-3 to 0-2. Ballinacor had the wind advantage in the first half so they were under constant pressure when play resumed as quite a strong breeze was blowing and D/G took complete control at midfield. Karen Walshe scored a cracker of a goal from a good distance out, Clair Whelan, Gemma O'Neill and Sile Whelan put over some fine points and Ballinacor managed to find the net with only 5 minutes left in the game with a good strike from corner forward Carmel Nolan. This was not as one sided a game as the final score line of 3-9 to 1-2 might suggest as Ballinacor fought to the final whistle. Team for D/G lined out as follows: Suzanne Whelan, Dearbhla O'Byrne, Mary O'Neill, Carmel Whelan, Sinead Whyte, Roisin Toomey, Lindsey Quinlan, Nora O'Neill, Alva Neary, Eve Whyte, Karen Walshe 1-0, Clair Whelan 0-5, Sile Whelan 0-3, Breda Walshe 1-0, Gemma O'Neill 1-1, Lynsey Walshe, Andrea Kealy, Mag Whelan, Amanda Butler, Dawn Whyte.
