Mountmellick land hurling league crown

July 11, 2008
Seven points from Killian Murphy helped ease Mountmellick to a 2-16 to 0-10 victory over Kilcotton in the ACHL Division 3 final at a rain-lashed O'Moore Park last Sunday. Laois dual star Johnny O'Loughlin was also to the fore for the blue and whites, scoring 0-3, as they pulled away for a comfortable victory after half-time. Kilcotton played some good hurling in the first half and thanks to some fine score-taking by Enda Fitzpatrick, Ray Drennan and Paddy Phelan, only trailed by a point at the interval. But it was all one-way traffic in the second half as goals from Diarmuid O'Flaherty and Mark Rochford ensured Mountmellick of a comfortable win. The junior football and hurling championships were also in full swing last weekend with Park-Ratheniska, Ballyroan-Abbey, The Heath, Graiguecullen and St. Joseph's all recording wins in the football.
