Newtown club notes

July 07, 2008
Attention was focused on Aughrim on Sunday last when Newtown took on Donard /Glen in the second match of the qualifying phase of the Senior Football Championship. This was a match which Newtown had to win to keep their championship campaign alive, and win they did, by the narrowest of margins 0-11 to 2-04. Newtown started off brightly with points from Neil Martin and Dean Odlum. There followed a period of missed opportunities and Donard turned their two golden chances into two goals. However Newtown battled back with three points to cut the deficit to a single point at half time. The second half was a bit of a struggle at times with Donard gaining the upper hand, but in true never say die fashion, Newtown finished strongly with Dean Odlum sealing the victory in the 60th minute. Everyone from Newtown heaved a mighty sigh of relief and the campaign continues with a final phase 1 match against Coolkenno. Man of the match performances came from Dean Odlum, Justin Owens, Paudie Doyle, Barry Davis and Jason Collins. Newtown scores came from Dean Odlum 0-05, Garrett Doyle 0-03, Neil Martin, Barry Davis and Jason Collins 0-01 each.  Congratulations to the Minors who had a good win in their championship match over Eire Og on Friday night. The next match for this team is on this Wednesday, July 9th, against St. Pats in Newtown. Throw in is at 7.15pm. The Juniors travel to Enniskerry on Thursday night for a league match at 7.30pm. Always check fixtures column for details of when all Newtown teams are in action. Don't forget the VHI GAA Cul Camp for kids which begins on Monday next 14th July. There are still a few spaces available so apply without delay as this promises to be a super action-packed week. Condolences to the O'Toole family on the recent death of Andy O'Toole. Lotto is now at Ä6,600. Just the ticket to fly to the sun and escape the soft Irish summer!
