The O'Donovan Rossa junior A footballers defeated Clonakilty by two points in their replayed second round championship encounter in Rosscarbery last Sunday afternoon. This win, built on a superb defensive performance, was hugely significant for Skibb as it secures their junior A championship status for another year and cements their place in the third round of the championship. Donal Og Hodnett opened the scoring for Skibb after a mazy individual run after four minutes before Clon replied with two successive points. Rory O'Donovan and Colin O'Donovan traded points from placed balls for their respective teams before Skibb scored three consecutive points through Donal ?ìg Hodnett, Stephen O'Brien and Rory O'Donovan to hold a two point lead approaching half time. Clon were handed a lifeline on the stroke of half time when full forward, Eugene McCarthy scored a soft goal for Clon to eke out a slender one point lead. Skibb beset by injuries started the second half in determined fashion regaining their lead following points from Eoin Hodnett and Niall McCarthy. Colin O'Donovan pointed from a free to restore parity for Clon but this was to be their last score of the game. Skibb showing great character and spirit in the final quarter, secured the victory with points from marading backs Shane Crowley and Niall McCarthy in the closing minutes to seal a narrow win on a scoreline of 0-9 to 1-4. The minor footballers enjoyed a facile victory over Beara in a friendly played in Glengarriff last Tuesday evening as they continue their build up for the championship. The junior A football championship replay between Castlehaven and Gabriel Rangers will be held in the Rossa Park next Saturday evening at 7.30pm.
