Counihan: We got out of jail
June 16, 2008
Cork manager Conor Counihan admitted that his side were extremely fortunate after two late goals saw them snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in their Munster SFC semi-final against Limerick.
"It was one we dragged from the depths but I have to give our lads a lot of credit for that," a mightily relieved Counihan said.
"We stuck in at three points down and there was always a chance we would get a goal. When we got the first, it shattered Limerick and broke their hearts. We got the second one but Limerick gave us one hell of a battle and we had predicted that all week."
The former star centre back admitted that the Rebels were well below par and have a lot of improving to do ahead of the Munster final against Kerry in three weeks' time.
"Tension, nerves, I don't really know what the situation was, but it was our first championship game and we were facing a really fired-up team."
Cork goal-scorer and team captain Graham Canty commented: "You just keep going. With the bunch of lads we have, nobody's going to throw in the towel. We rode our luck but we'll take whatever bit of luck we can get.
"We'll have to improve an awful lot for the final but Limerick played very well today."
