Supporters watch the Tipp v Cork Munster SHC clash from the sidelines
GAA president Nickey Brennan is awaiting an explanation from the Munster Council as to how 300 fans were forced to watch last Sunday's Munster SHC semi-final at Pairc Ui Chaoimh from the sidelines. The supporters, many of whom were children, were allowed onto the pitch behind the goal area at the Blackrock End after serious congestion in the terrace was caused by the late arrival of thousands of fans. But GAA top brass believe the scenes could have been avoided and are said to be deeply concerned that such a potentially dangerous situation was able to develop. "We await the report of Munster Council who were responsible for Sunday's game," Brennan said. "We want to find out exactly what happened." The Munster Council will meet in the coming days to discuss last Sunday's events, and are keen to ensure that a repeat doesn't occur, especially with so many big games still to be played in the province this summer. "We hope to put plans in place to make sure this doesn't happen again," said Munster chairman Jimmy O'Gorman. "We can't just ignore it and safety is always top of our agenda. Our Management and Finance Committee will be meeting shortly, in the coming days, and we will be discussing the situation in conjunction with the gardai and Cork county board. "At 1.30 or 1.35, we had 20,000 people in the ground, which means over the following 40 or 45 minutes, 22,000 tried to get in. The gardai were worried so they said to open the gates and let them onto the field. "There were very high ranking gardai in control of the situation and they are the people with the experience in crowd control."
