Shanahan to miss Clare match

May 08, 2008
Dan Shanahan is set to miss Waterford's opening Munster hurling championship defence against Clare after a scan showed he sustained bruising to the ligaments in his knee. The current Hurler of the Year injured his knee in the closing stages of Lismore's victory over Mount Sion in the county senior hurling championship last Sunday, and has been told to rest the knee for at least three weeks, meaning he is unlikely to play any part against the Banner County on June 1. While the injury is a major blow to Waterford, supporters will be relieved to know that it is not as serious as first thought and will not require surgery. Some reports had suggested that Shanahan could be facing several months on the sideline. As well as Shanahan, Eoin Murphy, Eoin Kelly and Paul Flynn are expected to miss the Clare game, while Tony Browne could also miss out if suspended following his sending off in a recent club game.
