Antrim to get new Centre of Excellence

May 08, 2008
GAA president Nickey Brennan and Ulster Council chairman Tom Daly were on hand in Dunsilly on Wednesday to turn the sod on a new Centre of Excellence for the development of Gaelic Games in Antrim. The ceremony, which included a presentation on the plans, was also attended by Antrim chairman Dr John McSparran and representatives from every club in the county. The 26-acre site just off the M2 motorway was acquired for £8 million and will serve the needs of Antrim, as well as the Ulster Council and the GAA nationally. The project has received financial support from Croke Park as well as from the Ulster Council and Club Aontroma. GAA president Nickey Brennan said the ambitious project would benefit from the opening of Croke Park to rugby and soccer. "This project will ensure that there is a long lasting legacy from the rental income at Croke Park," he said. Croke Park has not divulged the extent of its cash support for the project. "That was the promise and we are delivering to the grassroots," the Kilkenny man added.
