St. Martin's reach Kilkenny SHC decider

October 22, 2007
Muckalee outfit St. Martin's qualified for their first Kilkenny SHC final since 1991 following a decisive 3-16 to 3-8 victory over Fenians in their semi-final replay at Nowlan Park. The winners opened brightly with points from midfielders Paul Maher (two) and Shane Coonan, but Kieran Grehan's goal had Fenians on level terms after 11 minutes. But a similar score from John Maher had St. Martin's ahead by 1-6 to 1-3 at the interval. St. Martin's tightened their grip on proceedings when points from Eoin McGrath, John Mulhall, Brian Mulhall and John Maher helped them to a 1-15 to 1-7 lead. The game ended in a welter of excitement when the teams shared four goals during the closing five minutes. Substitute Lar Ryan netted twice for Fenians, while Eoin McGrath and Brian Mulhall replied with goals for St. Martin's, who can now look forward to a date with reigning All-Ireland club champions Shamrocks in the final.
