Despite the weather claiming nearly half of the weekend fixtures the opening day of the GAA season provided plenty of sparkle.

All the McKenna Cup games fell by the wayside while three two O'Byrne Cup and two FBD Connacht league games were also called off.

In Leinster there were wins for Carlow, Kildare, Wicklow, Louth and DIT.

In the FBD Connacht league, two Sean Armstrong goals saw Galway edge out Sligo after the Yeats men led by five points at the break. NUIG saw off IT Sligo in the other game out west.

In the McGrath Cup all four games went ahead with wins for Kerry, Cork, Tipperary and Clare sending all four college sides packing.

Two of the O'Byrne Cup games have already been re-fixed for Tuesday. Meath and UCD will be played at 7.30pm in Navan while Westmeath and Dublin throws in at 9pm in Mullingar.
