Morgan linked to Galway job

Cork legend Billy Morgan
Cork legend Billy Morgan has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Galway football manager's position.

Local bookmaker John Mulholland yesterday slashed the odds on the former Cork goalkeeper and manager before suspending betting after a flurry of money was placed on the Nemo Rangers man.

Morgan, who managed Cork to All-Ireland titles in 1989 and '90, and also guided them to an All-Ireland final appearance three years ago, was not among the five nominees for the position, but the Galway football board executive has the power to add him to the shortlist next week before interviews take place. Like this year's manager Joe Kernan, Moran has Galway connections as his parents are from the county and his father played hurling with Mullagh.

As recently as last month, Morgan revealed that he didn't miss being involved in inter-county management, which would suggest that he won't be making the long commute to the West next January.

This year's minor manager and former Offaly senior boss Gerry Fahy remains the 6/4 favourite, followed by former Mayo midfielder Pat Fallon at 7/4. Fallon has guided Barna to the semi-finals of the Galway SFC.
