McKenna Cup: Ernesiders edge past UUJ
January 15, 2009
Fermanagh 1-11
UUJ 1-9
Fermanagh recorded their first win of the year at the official switching on of the floodlights at Brewster Park by seeing off a gallant effort from University of Ulster Jordanstown in Enniskillen last night.
In a nip and tuck affair right to the very end, the contribution of Enda Ferris proved the difference as the hosts' danger man hit the Belfast students' defence for 1-3 over the 70 minutes.
It was UUJ that got off to a perfect start in the game though, as Ciaran Donnelly rattled in a fine goal in the opening stages, which was backed up by two points from Thomas McCann.
Fermanagh defender Rory Foy struck over a reply, before Malachy O'Rourke's side were reduced to 14 men when Ryan McCluskey saw red for an off-the-ball-incident.
The Sigerson Cup champions looked to be in control after that when Blaine Gormely and McCann thumped over singles, but Ferris (free) and Shane Lyons responded in kind before Ferris flicked in Fermanagh's goal, cutting the gap to two at the break.
The same player then levelled the game with two quick points at the restart, Stephen Porter restored the lead for the visiting students, but a sublime point from Shane O'Brien and great work from substitutes Mark Little and Eamonn Maguire saw the latter shoot the lead point for the Ernesiders.
From there, Rory Foy and Ciaran O'Reilly established a three-point lead for last year's Ulster finalists, which was hacked down by Peter Hughes and Declan Murphy, but the vital scores came at the end when Michael Jones and substitute Paul Ward sealed Fermanagh's first win of the new season.
