Des Burton and his grandson Malachy
A 67-year-old was part of the Aughrim squad which defeated Kilmac/Enniskerry to win the Wicklow junior 'B' hurling championship last Saturday.
Fifty-three years after helping Kilmac/Enniskerry to a similar success, Des Burton won his second junior medal after Aughrim overcame his former club by 1-11 to 0-3 at Arklow. The evergreen Burton played in attack in some of the early rounds of this year's championship and even scored a goal for Aughrim in their defeat of Avondale.
Burton lost his place on the starting team following the return of many of the hurlers to action after Aughrim's footballers were knocked out of the championship. Burton won senior hurling championship medals in 1961 and '63 in the colours of St. Kevin's of Bray, and played minor and senior hurling for Wicklow. His achievement in winning a junior medal more than half a century after his last must surely be a record in the GAA.
